A 28-year-old lady left wedding guests perplexed after she abruptly ended her wedding. The bride, identified as Clara Ogunmucoke, told guests who were present at the ceremony that she was no longer interested in the union.
According to some guests, the two were about to exchange their wedding vows when the bride took the microphone from the pastor and shouted “I cannot continue with this wedding” and left.
When asked what the problem was, Ms. Clara Ogunmucoke said she does not like the surname of her husband-to-be and would not want to bear such a name after marriage. Miss Clara indicated that she has on several occasions asked the groom to change his surname from Nwopopopo to something that sounds pleasant to the ears but her effort has proved futile.
In a statement issued a few minutes after the incident, the bride stated that she is attracted to guys with nice family names and to avoid the temptation of cheating, he politely asked the groom to change his name which he refused.
“I do not consider my surname, Ogunmucoke, to be nice – the reason why I want to marry a guy with a nice-sounding family name so that I can also bear one and be proud. I did what I did to prevent future infidelity on my part. I sincerely ask him to forgive me for embarrassing him in front of his family and friends. But I cannot continue with the wedding if he won’t agree to change his name, “Clara averred.
She continued, “I really do love him except for his last name. If he claims to love me too, this shouldn’t be too difficult for him to do. Let him prove his love for me by legally changing his name. What am I doing with a name like Nwopopopo? I will even feel ashamed to mention it in public.”
“We can always plan another wedding whenever he is ready. He has two months to fulfill my request else I will look for another guy to marry.”
The groom, Thomas Abiola Nwopopopo, who was left in a complete state of shock could not hide his tears after the incident. As to whether or not he will consider changing his name for the lady of his dreams, Mr. Nwopopopo said “only time will tell.”
