After seven years at the helm of affairs, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, has expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet.
The reshuffle, which is expected to take effect from 1st July, 2023 will see Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia assuming the role as the Head of Communications and Digitization at the Presidency.
According to Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo, the decision to remove Bawumia as the Vice President and let him lead Communications and Digitization is aimed at strengthening his government’s focus on digital transformation and the development of the country’s infrastructure.
He said for seven years, Dr. Bawumia has proven to be lacking the basic economic knowledge to govern a developing country like Ghana but is highly knowledgeable in the field of Information Technology. This, he said, informed his decision to reshuffle his cabinet and send him to an area where his IT and digital skills will be useful.
The President in a closed-door meeting with the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, outlined the role of Dr. Bawumia when he assumes office as the Head of Communications and Digitization.

In his new role, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving digital connectivity and access across the country, as well as advancing the government’s efforts to promote digital literacy in rural areas.
“This is a strategic move as Bawumia has been leading many digitization projects. Over the years, I have keenly observed him and we can all attest that he has been a strong advocate for the use of technology to drive economic growth and development in this country. I strongly and honestly believe that he is not that knowledgeable in economics,” Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo told Frema Opare.
He continued, “I am confident that he will bring his experience and expertise in IT to bear in his new role, as we continue to build a more connected, digital Ghana. With him, I am very confident that we will continue to see significant progress in the areas of communications and digitalization.”
